Having a basic inventory

In this tutorial there is a key, a chest and a door. The key and chest meshes don't look anything like a key or chest but are just an example only. The good news is that the Kismet commands have already been created. Download the file below to continue this tutorial.

DOWNLOAD:: Saveinventory.udk (The Ultimate save system must be installed)

STEP ONE

To play this level you must pick up the Key and it will open the door. If you exit the editor and restart the map, the key will be gone and the door will be open. An image of a key will also highlight showing that you are currently carrying that item.

Once you understand how this works you will be able to make more complex commands/sequences.

If you look inside of Kismet when you open the Saveinventory.udk you can see that all the Kismet Widgets are clearly marked with comments.

This tutorial will be brief because of this.

STEP TWO

Locate the directory:

C:\UDK\UDK-2013-07\UDKGame\Content\Maps

(Example only)

Copy or paste the file downloadable above in the Maps folder.

STEP THREE

Start UDK, locate and load the map: "Saveinventory"

Select "Play" - "on PC' or right click the map and select "Play from here"

Pick up the "Key" then exit the map.

Start again and the Key will be gone and the door will be open.

Walk over to the chest and collect it then exit the map again.

Start again and the door will be open, the key and the chest will be gone and the chest and key will be highlighted in the left of the screen.

Read the comments on each widget to understand what it does.

STEP FOUR

Exit map and start up Kismet.

Take a look at the Kismet Widgets here. I have written comments with the Widgets so you can understand them.

Modify, extend and experiment with these Widgets and Sequences as much as possible. This is the best way to learn how the Widgets work and you will be able to build your own Sequences for your own projects.

Good Luck!!!!
