Saving and loading maps

In this part of the tutorial we are going to save the last map you were playing. This tutorial is a crude but effective way of  doing this but it does work. First, you will need to download the file below for this tutorial.

DOWNLOAD:: Worldmenu.zip(4.2mb)

There are 5 files zipped in this folder. They are called; Swimdemo.udk, swimdenotexture.upk, startmap.udk, sandmap.udk and treemap.udk.

Locate the file called: Worldmenu.zip from your directory and unzip the files.

STEP ONE

There are 5 files files zipped:

  • Swimdemo.udk (Main Menu)

  • Swimdemotexture.upk (Textures)

  • startmap.udk (first map)

  • Sandmap.udk (demo map)

  • Treemap.udk (demo map2)

If you do not have those files now, click the download link above. The image left is the title screen for this tutorial.

STEP TWO

Locate the directory:

C:\UDK\UDK-2013-07\UDKGame\Content\Maps

(Example only directory above.)

Copy or paste files mentioned above "unzipped" in the "Maps" folder.

There are no water maps in this DEMO even though it does say "Swimming around the world." Everything here is just an example.

STEP THREE

Load UDK. Load the map called "Swimdemo.udk"

You have to select "Play" -"On PC"

If you do not do this the DEMO will not work correctly!!!!

Press the "S" key to start the game. You will be in a map with two portals. One will take you to tree world and the other will take you to sand world. Press the "Esc" key on your keyboard. Now we didn't do anything but if you press "L" while in the main menu it will load that world with the two portals.

Enter one of the two portals. Maybe pick "sand". Once it has loaded, press "ESC".  Now, while in the main menu press "L" to load.

BAM!!! there you go...... you are in the sand world.

STEP FOUR

To delete all the saves and reset everything just press "D" in the Main Menu. When you press "S" now it will do nothing at all.

Everything is marked with comment boxes so you understand what it is. If you are getting confused don't try to see it as one big complex sequence. Look at it bit by bit and take your time and break it down piece by piece. Back the file up and even add extra worlds or maps you have created already and make your own sequences/save files.

STEP FIVE

If you open Kismet I have written comments on all the different widgets. So the rest is up to you on identifying the different sequences and widgets but they pretty much well explain themselves anyway....

Since Step Six is the last section of my tutorial, from here I wish you best of luck, NEVER give up, believe in yourself and I am sure you will create your project successfully.

There are a few more tutorials in this website which I recommend you see before you go as for they may assist you in other issues you may encounter.

Good Luck!!!
